Hello all,
please i'm trying to install and get apache to work on my linux system but i don't know how to go about it.Can anyone help here?

I guess u want to setup a webserver right?
Its very simple; make sure ur httpd is running,
which Linux distro are u using? did u install apache from RPM or u build from scratch?
hope u ve identified where your httpd config is? most likely in: /etc/httpd/conf directory.
Lets us know the details, then we can advice further.

alternatively, you might just search for apache.conf or httpd.conf as the case maybe on your root directory (/) id you have a GUI (e.g Gnome).

Yes i want to setup a webserver.Fowe said httpd shuld be running,how?Please i'm new in linux and i'll appreciate if u assist me to get it running.I have apache from Rpm and i want to get it done on fedora and later RedHat.
Yes i have identified where it is.Its in the same directory as you said Fowe.Thanks for ur time,i hope to improve and get better in linux by my interaction here.

to check if apache is running, try dis command: /etc/init.d/httpd status

You need to understand that each Fedora distro comes with apache server installation option. If you want to find-out if your system is running apache, please use the command:

/etc/init.d/httpd start

If you get a response it actually means that apache is well install and you've got it started successfuly.

Hey! on more step ahead. Use the command to make sure that apache start automatically anytime you restart your system:

chkconfig --level 345 httpd on

The command above makes the system to run apache whenever your system is restarted to 3,4 and 5 runlevel.
Go to your browser and type

http://localhost

You should see a Apache welcome page.
Congratulation!!! You are Done.

u can alternatively check the status of a running service by using the pgrep command. to know if httpd is running on ur box just type
'pgrep httpd'. if it , then u will get a display that contants some numbers as ur process ID and the name of the process/service
something like 1212 httpd

if there is no such display, just type 'service httpd start' . that will start the service.

that shud get ur apache running, then logon to the server by typing http://localhost or https://localhost depending on the distro u are using, some distro come with SSL enabled apache config. e.g mandrake
