The version 1.0 of MeeGo is already available for download oooo. It has a UX for netbook installed with it.
Currently, I am personally learning the MeeGo platform.. and i would be excited to find anyone join me in this.

If you are developer in Nigeria, please take every single post on this topic very serious.
The second half of this year would unveil a lot of opportunities that Nokia would create in Nigeria.
The better you are with Nokia services and platforms the better your chances of maximizing this opportunities ...

Yes oo.. it seams Nokia is about to get things right again.
And this cannot be achieved without MeeGo!
MeeGo is getting solid positional advantage even when we don't have a complete product running MeeGo yet.
Currently we have the 1.0 Netbook beta version is out, smart phone version is out and excitingly IVI is out too!

I certainly hope Nokia will not completely miss the point. The mass market does not appear to be a Nokia priority from what you have posted. How many Africans can afford cars, not to mention "in vehicle entertainment systems"? I wouldnt even go as far as asking about tablets.

Granted people are now adopting these "gadgets" in the third world, but for the mass market, these items are simple articles of ostentation.

Nokia needs to have a strategy for not just the high end (Smart phones, tablets, etc etc) but also for the (much bigger, in my opinion) mid/low end of the market.

By the way, the Meego UX is planned for Fedora 14, an even number release, due later in the year (fingers crossed, October/November). I wonder why u dont use odd number releases. Care to elaborate?

You are turning out to be the "Geertjan" of MeeGo.

I would have said seeing MeeGo and similar platforms is good. But thinking about it, it may also
be bad. It reminds me of the early days of J2EE when every Tom, Dick and Harry were rolling out
their own "framework", swearing by it. The result? Disappointment for many (mostly beginners)
who were lured into thinking a certain "framework" was the holy grail only to find out that it doesn't
quite cut it when its time for the real deal. Confusion follows obviously. If the much hyped framework
turned out to be rubbish, what hope then for the much maligned "upstream"? The good part is that it forces
upstream to sit up. The bad part some people just give up; some waste months leaning something that turns
out to be useless, all the time, avoiding the "core technology", such that in the end, they are far from
competent.


I have not tried MeeGo or any funky "framework" from Nokia and unfortunately, I don't see this changing
anytime soon. I would however like to discuss MeeGo and all the exotic Qt SDK's you folks are putting out,
if not for anything, just so I can be more informed.

Now to you last post . . .

To be perfectly honest with you, I don't think UI scores anymore, not on high end devices at
least. We can now take it for granted that all the platforms - Android, iPhone, Symbian and
J2ME - are pretty much are equal when it comes to UI. Who would have thought you would see
"J2ME", "Android", "iPhone", "UI" and "equal" in one sentence?


I have develop on all three and my most recent J2ME apps match or outshine their Android/iPhone
counterparts. J2ME gives me access to billions of devices ok, to reproduce killing UI's I would
focus on high end S40 or better) but the access is there.

A few more reasons why J2ME wins for me.


There are state of the art development tools from every serious phone manufacturer to support J2ME and I can
go from concept to code inside one IDE - test/debug J2EE (EJBs/RESTful services) side by side with
the client Midlets (J2ME) and desktop client (J2SE) . . . all in one IDE(netbeans, if you like, Eclipse)! I can
see how my apps modules will integrate from mobile end point to enterprise backend, test end to end, optimise code,
share code across app domains, remove bottle-necks and stress test. I can run midlets on different emulators - all
the Nokia S60/S40 releases, Samsung, LG, SE, Motorola. I can collaborate with colleagues cos there is superlative
version support (Hg, SVN, CVS). This is the way to code.



Moreover, I want the keys to the door. I want Freedom. Freedom to do what I want, with whatever i want, when I want and
how I want. I dont want anybody telling me I must have a Mac to develop for iPhone. WTFIT? I dont want to be anybody's
prisoner either. I don't want to be "jail-break"ing. The platform should do want I want, not what it or its capitalist
masters want. The last thing I want is to be locked in on one platform. With my limited knowledge of MeeGo, this is one
of my biggest concerns.



The skills I pick up dont end with mobile. The codes I write dont have to end there either. I can can
reuse the same value/model objects across tiers (there goes your C++ out the window, haha!). When you work like me, you
aim to reuse everything . . . if you can. With J2ME I can build for all the "standard" hansdets out there and I can also
drop to "closed-ish" brands like BlackBerry etc.



Now your arguement about devices being everywhere around us and we needing low level hardware control
got me laffing so hard I had a headache (maybe cos I havent been sleeping much of late). If you want
hardware control, learn machine language, full stop.


The reason why project Oak (now Java) was born was to deal with the very problem of devices being pervasive and development
being plagued by fragmentation - set-top boxes, microwave oven, phones, PDA, car TVs, etc. How then can this be Java's
Achilles hill? The problem you are trying to solve has already been solved, many many years ago.


And look, Intel, which supposedly is a Nokia ally. How many processor strands are they turning out every other year?

Let me give you an example, so that you know I am not just reading technews articles off the web and posting here:
I just finished part of a big project I am working on only yesterday and I am using the J2ME location API in the mobile "nodes". I have tested the same code base on Nokia Series 60, Series 40, Samsung (cant remember the device numbers), Motorola and the LG range, no code changes were required to run on all and adaptive support comes out of the box. By Adaptive support I mean the API automatically detects and provides the avaialable service without breaking code/functionality, allowing me to access to a greater spectrum of devices - for example, the API "implemention" will use the built in GPS if I install to a phone with one, if I install a device without an inbuilt GPS, the "implementation" provides the most suitable LocationProvider instance (e.g GPS via bluetooth or location via Cell-ID, or network). This adaptive support is transparent to me - i.e. I didn't write the code for it, it is there in the API, all I need to do is NOTHING!!!

That is one example where J2ME gives me freedom to build software for various kinds of devices (e.g. whether with in-built GPS, or not) - if you want, I can give you links to my Hg repo so you can see the sources. The architecture of this JSR 179 API is truely inspiring (I can't even start to explain here) using interfaces to allow provisioning across device capabilities. Now JSR 179 was started in 2002!!! That is 8 years ago. There is even a full blown nokia example project from 2004 or thereabout (Google "Nokia Tourist Route MIDlet") with open sources and a wonderful twenty-something page step by step PDF guide decribing what was done. So for you to be asking about how to deal with the absence of these kinds of APIs in J2ME, the answer is that that the APIs are not absent, they already there!!!

Even the Android Location API spin off a lot of their logic/architecture from JSR 179. No joke.

Now why are people rushing to Android/iPhone? That is the million pound question. Hype or susbstance?

This is the same problem in the early years of J2EE when everybody was shouting Struts, et al.

I will say, I have not wanted anything from an iPhone app that I can not do with J2ME on a phone with similar computing specs (RAM, processor) as the iPhone. Same goes for Android. But the reverse? Unthinkable. The iPhone app is bound to iPhone, also the Android. You dont run an iPhone app outside iPhone. So why would I bother?

I know specs will continue to improve and prices will become cheaper, but today and tomorow, I can roll out apps to hundreds of millions of devices and wait for that time in the future when I grandmother knows WTH an iPhone is.


The Question about MeeGo being an OS is besides the point, the issue is deving with Qt et al for MeeGo and the question is why should I bother? ( I am eagely wanting an answer, s’il vous plaît.


Now I mull over your question again " why are people rushing to Android/iPhone?" a very good question indeed. I am tempted to ask in response: why are you shouting MeeGo?! Think how many people would already be considering "rushing" to MeeGo, or Bada simply because it was mentioned as the next big thing by Fowe. Hype or susbstance?
