Career Development for Nigerians ... A Knowledge Sharing Forum!
A few weeks back, I finished my first cloud computing app. As I am tending more towards being anti-Google nowadays, I used Amazon (EC2 and SimpleDB) rather than Google's (AppEngine and Datastore) services. You might want to check them out as well.
Let me add that it is not strictly correct to say that only the iPhone supports GWT.
The truth is just that the iPhone browser provides better javascript support, compared to others (I haven't compared iPhone to G1 yet). Agreed Opera Mini and others are tooling up to provide better Javascript support, but the general consensus nowadays is that even if javascript is well supported by WebKit, Opera Mini, etc, it will not be feasible to share the same GWT codebase across PC browsers and hand-helds for a non-trival app.
So your "one app, all platforms" will at best be "one app, multiple code bases, all platforms".
Now we are talking of the high end hand helds here, the iPhones, the G1 and the series 90's. The fact is these are in a minority - for example, how many people in Nigeria use the iPhones or Android G1's?
When we step down to series 40, the Javascript support just makes any thought of a non trivial GWT app disappear. Ironically, there are a lot more series 40 users than series 90 + iPhone + Android combined!
Granted, the high end phones will get cheaper and more accessible; that will take time.
I have always been a proponent of "using the most appropriate (not the most hyped) tool for the job"; nothing against GWT, but as of today (and the foreseeable future) I think the architecture model I have adopted is the best, it allows me to deliver the best user experience on all the platforms I am interested in, with minimum effort.
omo una dey yarn.. interesting.. i even come tire till all i dey do na to check out whose post dey long past.. but tell u i even one print this thread for paper for further analysis..
man as for service.. yes i am but men i dey do wetin i no enjoy.. from previous post u would have notices i was a java fan.. but of late i have had to do more of php and i seem to be loosing grip on my java.. its an IT firm no doubt so am still coding only not the way i would have loved to.. but my personal task at the moment is to master a content management system and am working with Drupal. learning to utilize and build sites as well as custom modules for it.. this is so that i can reduce the amount of php codes i need to write and gain some extra time to do something else.. am still l intending to further my java big time as well. or atleast not get left behind.. at the momen i facing alot of delima on wether to do desktop app or web app.. and all roads lead to web applications.. cos this desktop thingy wahala plenty.. so on the web app.. i dey think of which framework and at the moment.. STRUTS,SPRING are my main contentions..
but all things said and done am still forging ahead.. well will look into u guys post and try to make some comments
Thanks X-2-X. I have heard of RCP and i actually started out on some of netbeans online tutorials i love it as it saves me the stress of building the whole GUI from scratch... but this is to me a new area to go into.. but i still intend to go into it fully atleast for building desktop java applications.. i definitely want to have a grasp of java desktop application developement.
As for web framework.. i did a random sample of a few from jMaki, sweetdev, icefaces etc... and i have decided to start out with Struts 2 and i just recently got a plugin for netbeans to manage Struts2 configuration..
i do have issues with using drag and drop with Netbeans and from ur recent write up ,it definitely shows u are better at using NB and i am encourage to look better into it.. i just used to get scared that the generated code may be to confusing for me to understand... I did give up on netbeans when i was building some GUi app some time back for fun.. using the GUI building and all the JPA stuff. though then i just discovered JAVA persistence tech... but all is cool..
What amazes me is this long list of TODOs i have.. where the time to learn them all... i need 6 more hours to each day.. may be that would be my prayer request..LOL..
