I guess its high time we started a National award system for Nija successfuls in Academics backed up and originated by the govt. I guess if this present regime can do this our generations will be grateful to them.

In my opinion, Ewuare is the greatest Oba the Benin Empire has ever seen.
Oba Ewuare The Great, reigned between A.D1440 and AD1473. A brilliant ruler, he is remembered for strong leadership and military prowess. Marching against 201 towns and villages over the southern Nigeria region, Ewuare expanded the empire's western boundaries to Cotonou and the Eastern boundaries across the Niger River! Among the subdued regions were Eka (Agbor), Ekiti, Ikare, Kukuruku(Okene), and the Igbo territories west of the Niger River (Onitsha et al).
Hear "www.Ijebu.org" - Oba Ewuare is credited for turning Benin City, the capital of the Kingdom, into a military fortress protected by moats and defensive walls. It was from this bastion that he launched his extensive military campaigns and began the expansion of the Kingdom from its Edo-speaking heartlands.
According to Guiness book of records (See http://www.tribune.com.ng/22102007/s_south_cul.html), the Benin moats (another legacy of the Ewuare's reign) was described as " the largest earthworks in the world ( in the pre-mechanical era)"
He not only expanded the empire, he built a sophisticated system of government to run the empire smoothly - A federated "empire", with dukedoms (Enogie's) and an all powerful parliament (similar to todays political system in the United Kingdom). He also greatly improved trade links with Europeans that fueled the prosperity of the Kingdom for decades.
Ewuare is named amongs the 50 greatest Africans of all time!
He is West Africa's "Alexander The Great", in my opinion.
It just occured to me that I would soon be accused of "Anti-feminism". So here is one of our Amazons . . .enter Dora Akunyili.
Dora Akunyili is a distinguished Pharmacist and Pharmacologist, not to mention a seasoned administrator leading fearlessly by example. So much is her reputation that TIME magazine called her the "DRUG WARRIOR".
Dora obtained a Bachelors degree in 1978 and Doctorate in 1985 from the University of Nigeria. She was the top student at the School of Pharmacy in her first year and won the Vice Chancellor’s Postgraduate and Research Leadership prize in 1984 and 1985. She has bagged a number of local and international awards.
Kwenu.com says "Dr. Dora Akunyili approaches her job with missionary zeal" . . . I dare add: "which is such a rarity in her country today".
For her fearless resolve to battle greed and ignorance which fuels the fake drug industry, she has become the target of assasination plots, escaping at one time with gunshots fired at her. Despite this, she continues to press on, ready, it seems, to pay the ultimate price.
Lets not worry about being or not being patriots. Lets just do what is right.
I say this cos even patriots can condone bad things - corruption, injustice, etc, but a righteous man wouldnt and these are the very things we need to stamp out if we must move forward.
It is righteousness that exalthet a nation, not patriotism. e dey for bible and Holy Qu'ran.
Jiggo. you don come with all this your "two liners" again.
Thread says a "Nigerian to be proud of", not a CNG member. Of course since CNG members are Nigerians, they are eligible too.
What do I think about nominating you? Well I dont have sufficient info about you to justify any response but if you think you have done/achieved enough for us to be proud of you, by all means post a message here for yourself. I am sure it could serve as additional tonic to motivate the folk on here.
Peace!

There was Chinua Achebe, and there is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who NigeriansInAmerica.com describes as walking in the footsteps of Achebe.
This young African Princess sweeps awards everywhere she goes and is on her way to becoming the brightest star of contemporary Nigerian Literature.
My greatest admiration for her stems from her unequivocal profession of love for her motherland, a theme which runs through most of her titles, especially these:
oFor Love of Biafra o Home is Where the Heart Was
Jason Cowley, Booker Prize judge described her Purple Hibiscus as the best debut I have read since Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things. Purple Hibiscus won the Commonwealth writers prize and has been voted one of the best books of 2005 by the Black Issues Book Review
Chima graduated summa cum laude from Eastern Connecticut Univ. , has a Masters from Johns Hopkins University, was a Hodder fellow at Princeton University and is currently following graduate studies (African Studies) at Yale University.
