Whats exactly is special about this Silicon Valley ooooo! It be like say na only from there good and original ideas dey originate ooo. This days when i see websites, i almost could predict its a Silicon Valley startup. Because they almost always do it right! This is coming from the post i did here on oDesk: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=3872
I think i need to go do one week vacation for there. It seams the atmosphere there naturally gives birth to good ideas and companies. MIT students are as smart as Stanford students. Yet its only in Stanford departments(in the heart of Silicon Valley) you would be seeing many graduate students who have dropped-out to one startup or the other.
Na wa oooo, who go start our own Nija's Germanium Valley I vote X-2-X

Just that methinks Silicon Valley can no longer claim monopoly for being the "centre of innovation/discovery". Bangalore (India) and Thames valley (UK) have sprang up, literally from no where, giving the "original" Silicon valley a good run for its money (eh, BTW, I can confirm to you that 95 % of the folks in the Thames Valley software enclave are Indians - they just colonize the place ke, I find Naija man tire I no see. I shout Chineke God !!! The remaining 5% re mostly EU citizens, "runnning the business").
So wetin stop "Otigba Valley" from springing up 2morow? Gov. Fashola, you dey hear me so?
Well, even if I cant tell how it began in Silicon valley, we can fashion how it can begin from Otigba or anyother computer highplace in nija. We have to change the rulers! I dont mean a revolt but we have to create a domain where IT professionals rule or are based. That is, if the issue is a physical location like Otigba or a virtual location like a website or a dynamic one for that matter like a dynamic synnergy of IT professionals, who know themselves and give end to end support of technology. It doesnt require too much administration but surely does. Those guys that are working in the realm in Vmobile and MTN etc, we may need to bring togeda to start the realm and idealise into them their true potential which is greater than an MTN paycheck and lets put all these training into use to start a ground shaking development! Starting on that basis, open up to bringing in young brains who are IT innovative. The idea is driving up our IT innovativeness beyond buying and selling of hardware, I guess and then into creating and patenting software tech, competently and strategically produced, taking it from our labs, this time desktop computers and servers to customers who will offer value for what we offer. Our first market may never even be a Nigerian one. Of course, are the Indians selling their products to Indians? So we shouldnt be dumb enough to say that too.
JUST BLOW UP THIS FORUM AND LET SOMETHING BE DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey just before u call it quit on the Silicon valley and the naija equivalent.. i need to speak my mind. First i did enjoy reading this thread and was just too busy to do a quick reply but now i think i can spare a few minutes or so.
Now talking about china and india and their silicon dream. Now those guys found a niche that they could fit into and capitalized on it. Now software or generally a successful IT desire or dream can only be achieved collectively using team effort. Sacrifices would have to be made. Independence from some government control may be needed. The only way we can have a silicon valley (or whatever u choose to call it in nigeria is only possible if we stop waiting for government to do stuff). If we the ordinary guys collaborate on some reasonable terms i think we can achieve a lot. Now like I said IT business is a collaborative effort. Now here in nigeria we are mostly interested in one man business, every one wants to be president and founder ,all by myself attitude. With that approach no silicon valley is possible. The best we can do is hold several seminars do all the TALK TALK TALK and beg foreign investors to come in (how much have we invested in ourself that others would come and invest).we also look too much at what others are doing and try to copy (FYI that issue of "copy copy make u pass" only worked in nursery school). Now enough of the bashing of sweet nigeria cos it will lead to know where now let me share a little thought on how best to achieve this valley of silicon in nigeria.
First of all the only approach to setting up a silicon valley in nigeria would be more of a private sector initiative rather than a government thing. I know no matter how much we try we always run to dady Govt for assistance. The only assistance they can give may be in the form of land, favorable policy and maybe donations in form of cash. Now looking around nigeria needs good internet access to be able to embrace ICT in full but with our half baked internet connectivity that is still unreliable for a full day we never will get there..we still be dreaming. Now i believe if a few private group of companies and individual could collaborate on running a mega group of companies to set up a good ISP service making use of the best technology out there. Including capitalizing on our wasted comm satelite our there. This companies will benefit themselves apart from getting good returns on the investment they get their own internet connectivity as well. This maybe followed up using a contribution approach where every member is expected to donate periodically some amount to the foundation of group.
Now i would go into hardware but i guess this is a more expensive business. But here is the fun part u dont have to build everything urself. We can make use of free and open hardware platforms to get stuff working for US. Like the Gumstix and Sunspot kind of program. We can get small microdevices and get them to do some good to our community. Especially in the area of mobile computing. Nigerians love phone or any portable electronic stuff they can afford. Who wouldn't like to read his or her news paper from a Palm Top like device on a daily basis using a cheap subscription approach. Without the need to store up old newspapers.
As for software, we have the market flooded with too much web designers designing lovely web sites that have very little functionality. Companies just need a web site here in nigeria most times not because they see it as a requirement in their business work process but because some other companies have a web site of their own. But then i feel we could do more in the area of attaching or linking our website to do more of Customer relationship management (CRM) and Business 2 Business thing. And also go into developing applications that can power our local businesses including government establishment and possible finance sector. Then we can think of doing out sourcing of software development as india is.
But then how do we start. First thing first get rid of the Me alone attitude and lets share progress and fame together.

The most essential ingredient for success in IT is KNOWLEDGE, full stop.
Lack of partnerships/teams means u need to work twice or thrice as hard. Lack of knowledge means you have no significance whatsoever. Which is worse?
The Nigerian IT industry has no global significance because of a dearth of a critical mass of individuals knowledgeable in IT. Most of the outfits u see in Bangalore, etc where actually forged by the western service consumers, seeing the fertile ground of experts, not by the Indians themselves.
If you are waiting for "we the ordinary guys [to] collaborate on some reasonable terms" then u might wait forever. Get out there, get the knowledge and show the younger folks coming after you that it is possible. The more youth you can inspire to follow your footsteps, the closer we are likely to get to the critical mass. When we have critical mass, collaboration happens naturally.
U dont need to beg foreigners to invest. Indians didnt beg foreigners. Did we beg them before they came for our oil? Get the knowledge. This world is a capitalist world where knowledge IS power - that is why the countries who have/attract the best brains are the super powers.
I ask you: Have you developed an IT solution in Nigeria, that adds value or satisfies a need, and taken it to a business man/entrepreneur and he refused to fund it? Have you armed yourself with knowledge of modern IT technology and gone to freelance project sites and bidded for jobs, I mean jobs that only very few people even understand talkless of can do? If you answered YES emphatically to these questions, I will take you seriously. Until then, let the pipe-dreams continue.
Nice Question but me cant answer the question right now. But i guess the major platform we can work on if we need to consider the all the Legal Requirements would be a LINUX DRIVEN effort and major open source platforms. Because come to think of it. most if not 90% of developers used pirated windows OS and VS tools. But to consider the User community that is microsoft based. We may just need to do some .NET & C# and just brace ourself to make sure we deal with M$S terms. But for Nigeria a stable open source approach would do some good.
