Hey guys this isn't really a forum to discuss google api services but maybe that may come as the discussion progresses. I just recently decided to look at google api servies which u can find at code.google.com. There numerous seriveces free to integrate into ur web application. the range is some what almost endless. fromthe notoriuos google maps to gprs and name it. but recely i looked into the orkuk section and their open social api. i realize the potential to improve most of our niaja forum sites. if u have ever used digsby UIM(uiversal instat messanger) you would realize that u can access yahoo mail, facebook, gmail, myspace .. etc from just one interface. imagine a wide adoption of this api ad u realize u can develope a naija social network that can be linked to other social sites like facebook. am talking chatting and message notification. now there is this other project called checkout. this provides services to integgrate chopping cart to ur application without you bordering about implementation details.all credit ad debit card type of validation is already handled for u. now the other interesting service is the contacts service. this allows you to design user contacts management and possible store them on a database somewhere in google planet. Now as for the contact i had this idea it could be possible to develope a simple web application whereby registered members ca simply connect their phone to the computer computer and from the web page or browser their contact details can be sync to a database somewhere in googlesphere.(I knu u would have to consider a lot of data security issues). But i hope u get the point. Now the other service is the shipping service. where by u can search fedex, ups and other well rounded carriers for chipping rates based on destination. Now brig that down to naija cotext. Well we have poor mailing services but sha its improving atleast i get my packages without it been tampered with. ow how about setting up a network of post offices in the internet sense where by i could send a letter to my dear old granny (who doesn't understand the meaning of Software/internet talkless of the mistery of computers) from my browser just like am typing in this forum, and it gets routed to the nearest NIPOST office closest to the destination and the mail man simply prints my mail from their computer or server or what ever. and can immediately wrapp this letter up and start sending my letter immediately if possible or atmost deliver it the next day. and guess what all this services for free without much programming from ur end.
So fellas i think a time will come or its already here where in my CV i will put there somewhere "google expert" with list of google frameworks or api sevices i have mastered. I think the time as come to look into building realistic applications that make good impact to our beloveth naija.
well now i must wait upon u for ur kind contribution or suggestion.CIAO!
well am not thinking in the line of piling up my Cv withstuff anyway. Maybe soon we would have to be getting google certified.but the essence of this post is to point out certain services out there provided by google which could be harnessed to better naija. am only trying to point out the possiblities arround. developing software is a big task especially one of immense benefit. but with google out there i think is time we could have small software startups sitting on the shoulders of the giant and doing giant stufffs.
Certain technological innovations revolutionise the way we live and think. Android will be one of them.
I love GWT, but I want less to do with web UI as it is more convoluted - it is always better (in the long run) to stay mainstream.
What I do is to create top-notch desktop UI's with the netbeans platform and make these apps web aware by chaining them to web services. Effectively, I then have a web application accessible from a desktop application! What this forces me to think through is portability and separation of code. Right from day one, I have to design my apps to run as RESTful or SOAP based services on a web server, but to be consumable by clients on desktops and more recently on Android capable phones. Is this is the future?

Nice one! but i am still thinking about your off-line concept. do you know about Google Gears? instead of designing a desktop application just because GWT needs internet connect at-least for a start, why not look at technologies like google desktop and gears, where u can setup a tiny http server to serve atleast your first web page. your analysis is clear and looks reasonable, but i am afraid of anything called desktop GUI this days man... infact for any service oriented application pls lets forget about desktop! except u wana sell turn-key solutions inside CDs
i think its safer to look at browser based mini http servers like Opera just came up with some days ago. and retain your offline application on a browser. For now you can focus on your business logic and data layers. the UI part is highly competitive this days and not easy to predict. i wld advice you look at building iPhone/Android applications as your UI rather than core desktop GUI's.

this is to say that we are not alone in this tough prediction, its an hot argument even amongst tech analysis and top tech decision makers. this new techcrunch article and its comments says a lot. http://www.mobilecrunch.com/2009/07/17/ ... -will-win/
