Is Fashola Crazy?

So there I was yesterday in Ikoyi traffic, wondering why I bought a car. My Okada days were blissful in unquantifiable ways and at this moment, I could exchange the effing car for a second-hand Okada! A vendor passes by and I glimpse an intriguing headline: Ikeja to Marina in 20 Minutes? I chuckle and thought, surely, someone has smoked something at Castles! I bought a copy anyway and quickly flipped the pages to look for the story.

Now, for those of you who haven’t heard, Gov Fashola and I are having an affair. We have been dating for about eight months now and the relationship is growing stronger by the day. I asked him out the day I began to see flowers and trees on the streets of Lagos. Our affair blossomed as the trees and flowers grew and all those numbskulls who are accusing my darling of using our money to plant flowers are lucky they haven’t said it to my face: what they would have heard from me who hunted them even in death. I finally fell in love with Rajibobo when I drove on both Bank Anthony Way, in Ikeja and Ozumba Mbadiwe in V.I. Ha, Rajiscoco, u too try! Now, if he implements half of what I found on the pages of Castles yesterday, I shall be asking for his hand in marriage sometime soon!

The Lagos State government, through the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has invited bids for the construction of rail tracks and stations for approximately 23km of light rail system from Okokomaiko (close to Badagry) to Marina and 34km from Agbado to Iddo, with a link to MMIA. This project is different from whatever rail projects the Federal Government says it has. The contract period is for 30 and 24 months and commences on 1st January, 2009. The Agbado- Marina Line, which will be known as the Redline will carry 1.3million passengers daily. LASG will fully fund this first phase of the project and seek public-private partnership for the second phase, which includes the Green Line, Marina to Lekki Airport (via V.I, Lekki, Ajah, Lekki 2), the Yellow Line - Otta/MMIA to Iddo, the Purple Line, Redeem to Ojo, the Brown Line Mile 12 to Marina, and the Orange Line, Redeem to Marina. If you fear that whatever is run by government ends up in ruins, the LASG is conceding the running and maintenance of these facilities to private hands for 25years. I had given up on seeing anything close to this in my present incarnation. With a go-slow president and marauding politicos, all hopes of a normal life have been pushed forward to my next life. Now, with Fash on course I can hope again. Sacrifices will have to be made, no doubt. Peoples’ ancestral homes will have to give way for these constructions, but if we all see the bigger picture then we can see the attendant benefit to all. While it was awesome standing before a Da Vinci at the National Gallery in London; while the buzz of Leicester Square at midnight on Friday (and every other day, really) is delightful; while the sights and sounds of Soho and West-End linger, it is the time spent on trains that I remember most on a visit to London. The sheer pleasure of bursting out on the streets from the underground remains indescribable. That mere thought that something close to this will happen in my lasgidi is truly refreshing.

It will take a lot to make this happen. By the standards of Nigerian politicians, Gov Fashola is attempting suicide. He is crazy to even contemplate this scheme, knowing how his enemies will gloat should he fail. On the bright side, if he pulls this off, it would be the most significant revolution on the continent, far more important than whatever we have achieved with GSM. Fashbobo should just relax and rub Madam Fash’s behind or have her playfully rub his head for the rest of their lives.

I have never voted in a Nigerian election, but when the next elections come I know I will be first on the line. However, as it’s being rumoured, should Mr. Fashola refuse to contest again in a bid to return to his law practice or something equally mundane, I hope he leaves this planet as well, ‘cos I will personally hunt him!
