I know a lot of Nigerians are now thinking IT....and thats good news for us.
This topic would discuss how you can start from wherever and land yourself into IT or even a Professional....
Either your academic background is Philosophy, microbiology, accounting, engineering, or even Yoruba literature!
The aim of this topic is to guide you into seeing the importance of IT in your field, finding your niche and steps to take in case you are really enthusiastic enough to become a Professional.
First i would post an article i gave out in a Seminar i delivered Oct 1st 2006 in Lagos.... its a Seminar for Job Seekers that i was invited to by AllJobsNigeria.
Then we would fully start.... I would appreciate corrections, questions, and contributions from all!
Regards

Ok lets start mapping it out....
Lets start from the requirement for every IT professional.
If your desire is to bear that name...and you dont really know where to start form
This are the 3 key things you need...and the magnitude of importance in %
1)Interest/passion for IT stuffs .... 65%
2)Personal Computer ...... 25%
3)Internet Access .... 10%
If presently, you score yourself upto 75% in this arrangement, then within the next few months you wld surely ve become an IT professional...It cld be this logical and automated.....
I wld still talk more on this, especially from the motivational angle...
Then i wld start talking of which areas of IT u shld try based on wherever you are coming from either accounting or archi, or banking etc...
Regards

That was a good topic, surprising that i found no response to the topic.
Anyway, I have come to believe that IT is the Future well from where every man would drink from to satisfy their ever wanting thirst.
I happened to have trained some people who desired to start a career in IT and one thing i usually ask them first is "What is your PASSION" irespective of your profession (just like Fowe said). Though your background could aid, most especially if you are numerically inclined, but i have found out that PASSION make way for everything and less i mention names of those who have crossed the bridge already.
Having answered this question, I believe very well that Microsoft Office Suites is the best Package to go through in order for a novice to know his or area of speciallisation. The Office suites contains -Microsoft Word -Excel -Access -Powerpoint -Frontpage -Outlook -Publisher ------to mention but a few.... It is from their likeness to the above in whatever combination, that i proceed to profering an IT path they can take and the possible Certification that follows......
Yea Fowe, First i take them thru IT Basics.....and ask them to ask whatever question that comes to mind,. then i size up those questions in whichever area they fit, answer them now or later.
Having done the basics, creating the necessary appetiser and seeing it in them....i go strait to teaching Ms Word... then follwo with Powerpoint cos i know most people love to see pics and graphics.....
If am able to take Excel, Access and Frontpage, the stage is set....their responses from each would determine if Database, Development, Website, Networking etc is their path and i advice as regard.
Hey man, you shedding big light to problem i like to solve. I usually try to find peoples passion form their daily activities or O-level results But i didnt know office package could also be a pointer! But i were to be IT novice, do you think this can work for me? Knowing fully well that i ve never been in interested in any office package and i am still like a novice wit most of them till now
...........Yea, u sure can from daily activities; this is just another angle to make things work.
First i start with Computer fundamentals, then strait to Ms Word, then Powerpoint since most people like pics and graphics.....then Excel, Access and Frontpage...
With all of these, there interest will sure show up in one of two of the above and then this can be traced to the most likely professional path to follow..... Excel and Access are sure bet for a Database guy.... just as Frontpage would be a lovely ground for Web design ..................
talking of IT whats happening to our nigcomsat2.not much after the lunch.how do we think and go it when our sat is our there in outer space wasting or decaying.pls what was the whole aim of the project.can we still go IT if we still depend on outside bodies for our internet connection.i learnt or read in the papers the qualms NCC is haveing concerning frequency allocation.look man this country is sick. there is alot of potential and hope but most educated people who are to move things just go krackkkksksyyu.jeez man we need an IT saviou. FOWE can u suggest any(cld be u u knu) or better still any careersng person
You said: look man this country is sick You sure can't get a saviour out of a sick country, probably, in your words, the IT Saviour too are SICK.
I would rather you believe their will be light at the end of the TUNNEL. I agree that things are not in there perfect sharp, if not, hw can you explain a Money spinning project that has been lying fallow since it was launched in May. Imagine if such project had been done in South Africa or Ghana; they sure will be in money now.
At the launch of the Nigcomsat; i thought IT Life had come to Naija, but hope is still hoping!
We'll sure come out of it......this is my belief, not out of fate but FAITH. The bad eggs will be kicked out, and creative minds like you, me and million others who can turn Naija around for good would be in such position.
Thanks fowe for the topic, i am a student studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering, i am really interested in IT but do not have the resources and learning material to become an IT professional and how to schedule my time,i am really interested in programming, never had any precious certificate in computing or attended a computer school just stuff i learned on my own and via the internet. I would like you to advice me on how to go about it and how to get learning materials.I would be very grateful if you or anyone helps me out.Thanks.

. An Adendom to this important topic... Here is a Seminar i presented at Lyte Solutions in Ibadan in June 2006. Its about Open Source and how it benefits you as a Nigerian to becoming an IT professional.
I think the power point is doing nothing in my hard disk, its better to have it here!
Enjoy

I learnt Javascript, HTML, applets and some oda wonderful stuffs on d net back in 2002... but it aint easy for me now...might have to register @ ds training centres to get some certifications.. or can i get a personal tutor.. d challenge i have is "reading on ma own" its not as easy as b4... (1) with the kind of job i av, it aint easy (2) am not in the IT section of the coy....so nothint like on d job training and reading for me
so i have to resort to coaching centre...to bring my brain back to IT, then to concentrate and start reading...
