My sister's friend is doing his MBA in imperial (long distance)
I was interested in Heriot watts MSc (becos they give u d same cert as they give the full-timers and it costs less that 6k pounds.)

There're others but I only mentioned Imperial and heriot watt bcos both are solid schools with solid programs. You can chk the site yourself (I wont do that for u, except u wan pay me)

But can they be compared with being phisically there for studies. Lots of differences!

But it will remove the bottleneck called visa officers.

Only God knows what internet will turn this world to soon.

I strongly feel a science based second degree will not be too cool with online programme.
Except if one is just for the certificate.
Unlike MBA where u don't need lab or carry out any experiment.
The major difference between schooling abroad and in Nigeria is wider in science and engineering courses than with social sciences and art courses.
This is primarily as a result of facility.
I believe this facility we are talking about here is not classrooms or lecture rooms but primarily laboratory and conducive research environment.

The main difference between the online pet engr and the full time is
1. Field trip
2. School resources

Yes, you do go on a field trip but that's d only "practical" involved. In fact it is "excursion". You just go and see finish. That is, it's just for the exposure.
The real "practicals" are done on programs: Simulation software and the like. In fact most of your assignments are done using these programs.

The resources the school provides is access to library, software and pc's. The question now is how much of these software is the school willing to provide FOC to distance learning students

An online MSc in any of Mech or Elect Engineering can not be compared with school based MSc.
You need various machines to carry out different experiments.
Anyway, am not too surprise as regards your explanation for Pet Engr afterall virtually all science or engineering based course can enrol for it.
If not for the problem of certificate-craziness that we are facing in Nigeria I don't think this online stuff is worth it for the core engineering MSc.
I guess UK is as a crazy with certificates as Nigeria.

YES! UK is crazy about certificates but do you remember that there were many courses that you did that only comprised of lectures & exams? Remember the main thing HERE is EXAMS. If GCE was not rigged as much, GCE will be exactly the same as SSCE, just as SAT and GRE are now dominant test benchmarks (no instruction JUST EXAMS). Note: the exams distance learners do is EXACTLY the same!!
Also for ur information, some of this programs ARE WORLD CLASS. e.g. Heriot Watt's www.pet.hw.ac.uk & Texas A & M's pet engr, are the best in the industry and they have both fulltime and online editions
I shd also mention that some of my undergrad courses were taken as distance course by some people
I saw of recent that LSE has some online programs through university of London www.londonexternal.ac.uk
