Career Development for Nigerians ... A Knowledge Sharing Forum!
Sometimes ago, we discussed on the rating of Nigeria University with the foreign ones. I want to say with my little experience in the working field, I will like to share my views. I did a consultancy job for a well renown oil company and a program was requested to be used for the project. It took me only two days to master the program. But, as you know, the white man always underrate we, the blacks. They invited another engineer from Italy who came to my desk just to give me kudos for my work. He said he does not know how to use the program. Up till today, above 5 foreign engineers can not operate the program. I was trained in Nigeria (I DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHERE THE BOARDERS ARE) but I stand my ground that Nigerians are one of the most intelligent people in the world, if we are given the opportunities. I tried my best to work for the federal Government of Nigeria (DPR (INVITED FOR THE FINAL INTERVIEW)) but to no avail due to whom u know. Nigeria educational standard might not be ranked among the best in the world but Nigerian students are one of the best if given equal opportunity like the foreign students. I LOVE YOU ALL. This is our country, our government should try to encourage us.
Yes, if we are given the opportunity. Sir, 1. have you ever gone for interview and you are double sure that you are in better position to have the job due to your experience in the field. 2. Have you ever work with the so-called expatriates where in there country are mere casual workers and in OUR BELOVED COUNTRY (NIGERIA) are our boss (Directing our experts). It will be sad to know that our government relies more on so-called expatriates (who are learning for us) and gives them the best opportunity to tapping our experience against training our upcoming generation and putting us into another generational slavery.
Actually, with the quality of education we were given in the first degree, i believe if nigerians' student were given the opportuinity to be trained in their fields of study, we will simply be among the best
What can we do? We can mimic those products of the western world in our own code and language and cultural uniqueness, example is the idea of the guys who designed that webpage that can be used to navigate around in Lagos based on inspiration from knowlege of GPS and challenge from ideas of global navigation systems that we can use to get directions to anywhere as used in Europe. Am familiar with the equivalent in the city where I live and the London underground system. We can do such mimics and then improve them. We can find some weeaknesses or unique needs. Make Nigerians internet reliant based on IT products we can offer by or over the internet. We can then take them(such ideas) to the next level that is make it impregnable to fraud and cheats and make it a safe and secure systems and we will need to be similarly committed to updating and improving. We can develop our banks to have internet banking systems that work and is internationally qualified. There is so much we can do. The thing is how many are catching the fire and getting committed to it.

Yeah, I quite agree. We could do all that and more.
But can we? Experience tells me probably not!
Our de-emphasis on skills and learning is astonishing - : people want to pass CCNA with braindumps regardless of whether they know the nitty-gritty of the subject, no one bothers how you pass, "so far" you pass. People have BSc in Comp Science and dont know how to double-click (true first hand experience). People make first class in Engineering and end up in Exxon Mobil in Lekki "reading emails" - wasted brains, or so it seems.
Unfortunately, in the IT world, what you know "is" everything thats why Facebook can spring up from, literally speaking, someones bedroom. Without skills, all we think or say we can do is simply wishful thinking. It wont happen.
BTW who told you that Nigerians aren't doing something? They are. But the number of true "gurus" amongst us is vanishingly, vanishingly small.

....Nigerians @work keep emphasizing MBA and manager positions over core technical competencies(And they get most of this so-called positions with political skills ooo not with Harvard skills). They forget that when it comes to technical stuffs, if you don't get it right its never going to work! Google is not leading the ads business because they are better in marketing...its because they have this core and top-class technical competence that makes all this incredible technologies work! Nigerian companies continue to under-emphasize the importance of core technical skills...i really dont know why!? when many of their services now fails to work, they would prefer to spend all the thousands of dollars to invite Oyinbo, and Deza would not be happy about it.. Well, i guess we are still developing, competition would soon sweep all of them away!...the world is becoming a global village.
Regards
