My main reason for this message is, can I get a shopping website? Both software and database that it runs and all that shit to make it easy. Can you help me with outsourcing ideas and addresses so I can ask for this idea to be done or something. I have dreams, can we make things work? When I say shopping website, I mean an electronic package that contains all ensuite already built rather than being done from scratch cos one needs one. Thanks.

ok .. well one can build ur shopping website using a CMS and am talking Drupal.. adding and configuring a simple shopping cart module and whats more interesting is that u can manage it urself... but it requires some good understanding of the drupal system.. guess what 0% code writing except for some CSS, html, javascript depending on the visual effect u want... there.. learn more about http://www.drupal.org
As for, am thinking or we should be thinking of making these things relevant to Nija society. Take a modification like that instead of paying exclusively with Visa and Mastercard, we issue product or order I.D's with which the customer goes to pay in the bank. The customer has to identify to the bank as the product I.D and the bank has to record as such and we can get the customer to come for pick up at the store. Simple modified online trading that can be done in Nigeria!
The ideal store type is something like Argos in UK.
I appreciate your expertise but please think along these new ideas that include the present Nigerian society too.

I actually thought to 'hire' the knowledge of someone else here not to go back to school on such things. I am asking as an entreprenuer who wants to work with you- skilled people. But if I have to be 'punished' to go and learn the software all by myself and probably get frustrated in the process and not get the original problem solved? Then I wonder what we are doing here.
I just commented on a post after X-2-X in which he provided solution more precisely to the issue. I wish same will be the order here.
As an entrepreneur I anticipate ideas and hope to be able to discuss them with those who want to work and can work with me to bring them to fruition. I must say that the idea of going to learn it all and do it all by myself does work well if am doing some small project or just a small unit of a project. But a massive project, I believe requires a different approach.
The question is, am I welcomed with this style here or not?

I am looking at a website with good security and able to handle at least one million goods in stock of up to one thousand species. How much does that cost? Its is the security or functionality of the software or website that is the issue now. The vision is a competitor with Argos UK or Amazon.com but the today may not be there yet so dont lets exaggerate the task and kill the vision.

Ok dats nice. where is your market, is it Nigeria or some other places I think you should be looking at a building a team of software engineers that would handle the project. You can outsource the intial design and implementation to a software company local or abroad, then employ a team to manage and extend it as your traffic (demand) grows. how good your team is would determine how secure your website is. security is a daily task and not a solution you can buy.
Regards

Getting a store front or shopping cart capable of serving millions of items and/or customers should not be a problem. The main challenge I see is in the payment system, giving the peculiarities of the 9ja environment. As I see it, there are 4 options:
Option 1 - rely on state-of-the-art payment solutions. This will typically be via internationally accepted Credit or Debit cards. The draw back of this method is that many 9jirians dont have internationally accepted cards hence restricting your customer base. The merit is that it is potentially the most secure.
If you go with this option, free off the shelf solutions exist; for instance, if you choose the Drupal Content Management System (CMS), Ubercart can serve as your shopping cart module. Think of CMS as an application that makes it easy for you to organise your websites' content (e.g images, pages, text, etc). It is like a projector, you put what you want to show in it and it shows it to your visitors - your visitors dont see the projector, they see what is projected. With the CMS, you can apply a consistent theme or look & feel (e.g page format, colour scheme etc) to all pages on your website. The shopping cart module provides functionality specific to online shopping (e.g check out, payment processing, order registering, etc). The shopping cart module is seamlessly integrated into the CMS system so that a consistent user experience is provided to customers from the "home page", throught the catalog browsing to checkout.
I know . . . was going to mention your suggestion amongst option 3 and 4. But since u have asked:
Option 3: Reserve online, pick up and pay at store
Merit: Simple to implement. "Feels like Argos" (order and wait).
Drawback: 9ja people can reserve heaven and eart online and you will wait for them for store to come and pick it up & pay for it, but they wont show up. When do you decrease the stock count - once it is reserved or once it is paid for? If I reserve online and the stock count is not decreased, then someone else can reserve that same item (assume there is just one left) then he pays and picks it up in store before me - do you think tomorrow I will come to ur site to reserve another item? Or if I reserve online and the stock count is decreased, then I don't show up, meanwhile because stock was reduced other buyers couldn't buyers were told "out of stock"! It just convoluted.
Option 4: Reserve online, pay at bank, pick up at store. Like 3 above, but u pay at the bank (no cash handling at store, which reduces armed robber risks).
