To start with. Google Map is one of the best thing that ever happen to this plannet. I never know how much i was missing until i got one of the Nokia E-Series with build-in A-GPS.
You can get one of the Nokia E-series, download google mobile map and see how far google has gone with Map. I once save the coordinate of my house on the phone. So now I can show you a detailed direction to my house (you can even see the streets, turning but my area is not yet label )
The first time i needed to pick some stuff at shoprite. I just do a search right from google map on my phone and I got the location (cuz someone mark the coordinate on gmap anyway). So as i was driving down i can see myself moving on the map down to my destination. Is amazing i must tell you. Even when the driver was taking some rough corners to beat the hold-up i still know how to find my way back to the destination track, thanks to google!
Now, google also include a nice program that will interest mobile users. You can tell where exactly your friend is on the map, simply by logging into "LATITUDE". What does this implies? Let say i have a friend that uses an integrated GPS phone in U.S. We can both sign into "LATITUDE" on our mobile gmap. Then, you'll be amazed to receive a call that sounds like ... "Hey! seluwole what are you doing in Adeola Adeku Street, V.I?" ...you know what i mean? This implies that both party must logging to "LATITUDE" with google account (normal gmail username and password) and set the preferences such that google can report and signal where you are on a map.
Although there is "Show trafffic" support on the mobile gmap but the information is not yet available here in Lagos. Never check for abuja, but i do not think this information is available for now.
Let's hope we get to this level. I will like google to also include a function such that i can save a coodinate, setup a route and make them public right from any handheld with mobile gmap application just as we have it on the pc.
For whats left of this year, I would aim to average 200 edits per month on mapmaker. I mean editing maps for places like . . . oh yes . . . like my beloved Benin City!!! Done 20 today already.
Yea! Personally, i just add nokia into my radar as on of the company to watch out for. Nokia ovi map, which comes with some nokia Gps smart phone, is quite competitive. Nokia has been able give us a real navigation experience, here in Nigeria. This, I believe, is one step ahead Google maps (both the web & mobile map). Now, we got another giant step OVI SDK for coding API. The idea is very simple. Nokia have seen that the industry is just too large and market is soo big. So they decide to get the world involved with no pay. I believe this is another giant and a brave step.
