Haaa,
i think this is a hot topic that i can learn a lot from.
I have actually being meditating on this issue for about 2yrs now.
I call it networking vs competence ... which is more important.
Rather than attacking the issue directly, i would approach it in this simple concept of disappointment and then you can judge for yourselves

In try to get a higher position in life,
Networking (who you know) is the only way by wish you can get a big disappointment from your trusted people.
Competence (what you know) is the only way by wish you can get a big disappointment from yourself!

a question every one should ask

well wht u know will actually take you any where in live so far it is what you know but who u know....... i will say sometime it looks like mirage depending on who u know cos we are all human and not God.

In all, I believe u can disappoint the 'who you know' if u don't have "what you know"!!!...... The two I believe are important but "WHAT U KNOW SEEMS TO ME AS THE MOST IMPORTANT".....! cant say 2-much but since it is a 'VS' thing I choose WHAT U KNOW!

I think at this stage we need to put them on different sides on different occasions,
"Who you Know"- it really works for you in some segment at some place where your knowledge or intelligence is not important and most of us knows how that works, no need to point of finger any aspect, if you are there and dont know anything, that is not their business after all what did they know either ... the scale here is 70/30 in favor of "who you know"
"What you Know" - hmmm...This always goes with Careers, delivering what you have and develop businesses, People and Self in particular. And this is very important and is one of our problem as a nation because we lack this a lot, because all we think is to go to school to get the certificate not the knowledge and at the end you will hear graduate without job, teachers without knowing what they are teaching...
The scale here is 80/20 in favor of "What you know"
My conclusion is "What you know" is what will made you to be "whom to know". I respect "What you know" a lot...
