I think they should make it optional.
For the guys who need some personal development, or somewhere to stay and keep body and soule 2gether while dey look for job, can go for nysc, while d guys who ve immediate job can 4get it 4ever

Thats actually the best idea. But I doubt they(NYSC/co) will consider it. Some people gain so much from the scheme (fraudulently of course) so they wouldn't want to see the annual intakes going down.
I bet that majority (myself inclusive) would decline the NYSC scheme if it was optional.

No body has talked about the origin and reason for the scheme.I believe before the scheme can be thrown away like a baby in the bath water,we should look at why the scheme was established and how far it has fared.
Unfortunately, this is now a country that sees MUCH VALUE in our Oil than in our HUMAN ASSETS.
Did i hear someone say the quota system to be adopted by NYSC is due to lack of funds? cos if it is then we should cover our faces in shame.
My opinion is that the Scheme can be preserved but the idea of posting people here and there should be scrapped. One's place of service should be determined by his/her place of abode cos this would reduce logistics and cost to the Govt.
If this is adopted, people can work and converge at the camp at different times where VITAL trainings can be given to Nigerians with the Usual cooperation of Employers. Those not employed should be the ones to earn the 'Allowy' to keep their minds alive and distant from vices.
After one year, those working will continue their work while those not working would have benefitted a lot in terms of Personal Development AT NO COST!
NYSC to me is SUPOSSED to be a Strong Tool for the Government to IMPACT and DIRECTLY DEVELOP Great Minds for the Nation. If our Leaders see it as Such, then Money will be made available. If otherwise,No Need for it to be Compulsory!

hi, From a neutral point of view, the founders of NYSC must be commended. On paper, the scheme is the best thing dat has ever happened to this country. It was supposed to expose us to situations we are to face as we have graduated, learn new cultures, get employed, look for our lost ribs - for those of us that are missing some ribs e.t.c. But just like it is with naija, the implementation started well -@ least our fathers still carry fond memories- and over the years, it has been rubbished.
I remember sometime ago in my school, students were giving out money (tens of thousands) for them to go for service. this was becos, after schools send their list of eligible corps members, NYSC prowns down d list saying they cant carter for everybody. The result is a situation like dis - I graduated in 2005 and served in 2007. so in between dat time what would have happened to me, 'cos i can't get a Job? Also, during our service year, copers from abt two schools were recalled and de-kitted, becos of irregularity in academic qualification and possibly admission. So u see dat, this spans more than with the scheme itself but that also it also has to do with our greed and selfishness (students and staffs of schools & NYSC alike).
I think what we should do for now, is profer solutions to this NYSC bacslide cos u never know who would be viewing this forum. (In our corper discharge magazine, this site was listed as a career site.)
