Career Development for Nigerians ... A Knowledge Sharing Forum!
Without any doubt, this country would have been a better place if Social Security in whatever guise or name were instituted.
X-2-X raised two options and like Fowe, I go for the First Option. Reason being that one of the major cause responsible for the increase in crime rate in Nigeria today is the visible affluence of the "Rich" or "Wealth" on the increase in a Country where we are surrounded by "Poverty"!
If the Rich keeps getting Richer and vice versa for the Poor, it create a problem for the society and the Rich ought to worry. One of the Most Difficult Battle or Crime to fight is one where the Criminals have lost hope for living and consequentially Value for their Own Life.
The More You Earn the More Tax You Pay methodology does not necessarily bring about equity in any society but certainly ensures that the Less Priviledge, Poor, Old, Irresponsible, Physically challenged have something to look upto as far as living and quality of life is concerned. This Off Course Only Happens Were We have Accountable Leaders/Government who would properly channel revenue generated from tax to improving way of life and adding value to it.
Does Option 1 Eliminate Crime, Certainly Not. However does it reduce it? Certainly YES! For a Society like Nigerias, we don't need statistics on the Internet to Know that Quality of Life is on the Decrease, Gap btw the Rich and Poor is widening while Crime rate is Exponentially Increasing.
In essence Creating and Enforcing Social Security in a Society if you ask me is Inversely proportional to Crime rate and directly proportional to Maintaining/Improving Quality of Life. Off course there would be a constant which can imply :
1) there can never be a Crime-free society 2) human needs/wants can never be satisfied 3) an average Nigerian is contented with access to Food, Shelter and Societal amenities 4) effective law enforcement 5) etc,etc
Whatever the constant is doesnt change the equation that relates those three variables.
Addressing the main topic of the thread , the tax each individual pays varies. What is however fixed is the determination. This is what i know applies to Lagos state govt:
First 30k ---- 5% Next 30k ---- 10% Next 50K ---- 15% Next 50k ---- 20% Above 160K --- 25%
So if you earn 180K, 160k is taxed at 20% while the remaining 20K is taxed at 25%. If you earn 1.16M, 160k is taxed at 20% while 1M is taxed at 25%.
Shekina!

I feel others have not being pragmatic enough in this discuss so I might stop contributing. However, let me ask a question, if the rich make sure that according to OneUgo, every Nigerian has access to food and shelter(as for social amenities, whoever supplies that in full is trying to unseat government, so its up to your Governors and Presidents to consider whether you are worthy enough to get those or not), will all these craze for money people or government did not earn stop?
