Does anybody know what is d actual percentage of tax an average Naija worker pays from his salary? I want to use this to carefully design a pay-slip since my coy does not use payslip but pay by cash. Yet d employer claims to be deducting tax from source.
In a follow up to d above question, I don’t have active current a/c: I only make regular deposit to a Savings a/c. To ensure a flow, many pple deposit into it but I’m d only one that does withdrawals from it. With sufficient fund in it, is this tenable at any embassy as statement of account?
I guess if you are in Lagos state go and find out from the Tax office(they may think you want to get a way round them, so be careful) or talk to an accounting consult(go as a private person and dont get busted, make dem no implicate ur coy) or do a lazy internet search for taxes in Nigeria. Note nija no dey very internet compliant so to rely on what you get on the net is little questionable but at least a guide. I got the idea somtime ago. If I remember well it is like 25% on the first 100,000 naira and the rest is taxed seperately. It still a pay as you earn stuff but am no economic consultant. I may do the searchg again too.

And if someone is complaining too, for earning 160,000 naira in nija they tax you 22K but for my oyinbo land for earning equivalent(which might be nothing here), they will tax me one third of that before I see my payslip. Cool 53K for working in anoda man's land. So enjoy what you have.

Hello All, Am used to using the word 'fela' or 'fella' (not sure of the best spelling), it is important to note that it is an English word that can be replaced by fellow.

Small note, I respect the man Fela Anikulapo Kuti, cos he was an African music genius. You dont need to argue if you know him and his music credentials.

I did a small survey and I found that it is kinda hard to place a single number on tax rates in Nigeria - folks earning about the say amount could pay different taxes, depending on their employer (etc). Do we think this is right?
CITN, the institute of taxation, did not specify any company related condition. I really suspect that the companies are taking advantage of Nigerians. It might be proper to report such discripances to CITN for investigation and legislation.

Option 1: Institutionalise welfare and distribution of wealth - take from the productive class and give this to the unproductive (unemployed, etc) by putting them on "welfare". Might encourage laziness - a guy on the dole, getting drunk and breeding (making babies).
Option 2: Every man for himself system - leave the unproductive, unemployed, etc on their own. Might encourage hardwork, but you will also have those who take the apparently easier route (prostitution & criminality - armed robbery, yahoo-yahoo, ashewo "work", not to mention kidnapping). I know, I know, ashewo no be work, but you get ma drift huh?
Just out of curiousity, which do you prefer? Each system has its pros and cons, but which do you opine is a lesser evil? Just curious.
But na wa oh. Some people dey find work, some people dey complain of tax!
I wont choose any of the two exclusively. The solution is an hybrid not a pure breed of ideas.
One of my prayers for Nigeria, is that, Nigerians would get used to seeing solutions that are hybrid and adopt them more and not only thinking uni-directionally at any crisis point. That, is said, with all due respect and it is not focused at addressing anyone in particular but society in general.
If we focus on the important or most important issue, all must survive and none should be cheated or disadvantaged, we can easily agree to rewarding the hardworking more and discourage irresponsibility. Welfare might be made available but then it must only be used to define the lowest class allowable in society. No one should be without some basics. It is not a sponsorship but a support.
Today, many welfare packages are sponsorship schemes so that they can be exploited for constant irresponsibility of the takers. A responsibility must be attached to a welfare. We can only do so much. We are not omni-provider and never should be seen as such. We must never fool ourselves thinking that having so much equates to having all.
To have or own anything, levels of responsibility is needed. The richest people are actually those who are most responsible with alternatives made available to them by nature or design.

The problem is that that number one can lead to widening the gap between the poor and the rich. The reason is one I would not want to talk about here. Widening the gap actually compounds the problem not solves it. I think we are looking for solutions here.
