Summary: This tutorial walks you through how to play MPG files in QuickTime on Mac OS X without any hassle. Learn tricks now. QuickTime is the default media player on a Mac computer for playing HD Video files. However, more than one guy met issues when opening and viewing MPG files in QuickTime on Mac. Want to know the best solution to playing MPG in QuickTime on Mac successfully? Just check out this simple guide. Q1: Can't play mpg files in QuickTime.... I tried to play my old mpg home video files with Quicktime that came with Lion, but it said I needed a Codex. It took me to a page that said I needed to upgrade to Quicktime 7 Pro. So I purchased that app. When I try and play my mpg files through it is says "This movie could not be open. It is not a movie file". Uhhh... yes it is. I've been playing them on my PC for years... any ideas what's going on? Q2: Quicktime won't open mpg files I am trying to create a DVD with chapters/scenes from a single .avi file that won't open in Quicktime. It's the basic QT, not pro. I can convert the .avi file to .mpg (using Burn or other tools), but the resulting file (.mpg) won't open in Quicktime either. Seems if it won't open in Quicktime… From the above quoted issues, you can easily find that when play MPG video in QuickTime, problems always occurred: only audio exists or even worse, QuickTime just crashes! In cases like these, it's needed to convert MPG to MOV or other Mac compatible format. To easily convert MPG video to MOV video on Mac, a third party video converting tool is needed. Here the professional Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac is strongly recommended. It has a user-friendly interface, which makes it very conveniently to convert MPG to QuickTime MOV format with the best quality. Besides MOV, this Mac video converter can also encode MPG to MP4, WMV, AVI, FLV, M4V, 3GP, etc video types on Mac OS X (El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion and Snow Leopard included). Download the program and start the MPG to QuickTime MOV conversion. Step 1: Load MPG videos > Run the MPG to MOV Mac converter. Two ways to import MPG videos: 1) Drag & drop MPG files to the Video Converter directly. 2) Go to the Add button to locate the MPG files you want to import. Batch conversion is available, so you can add more than one MPG file at one time to save your time. Step 2: Choose MOV as the output format > Click the format bar and choose output format. You can also choose "Common Video -> MOV - QuickTime (*.mov)" as the target format for playing with QuickTime. Step 3: Start to convert MPG files to MOV When everything is to your satisfaction, click the Convert button to start the MPG to QuickTime MOV conversion process. Now you have the output MOV files and can play, edit seamlessly on your Mac. Editor's Notes: As you see, by converting MPG to MOV format, you can play MPG movie in QuickTime on Mac OS X with ease. Well, to play MPG on Mac OS X, there are some other alternative ways: Play MPG in QuickTime with Perian installed; Download QuickTime player alternative- VLC for playing MPG files on Mac.
